Subtasks & Hierarchy

Clarity.Do supports unlimited task nesting. Any task can become a parent by adding subtasks beneath it, and subtasks can have their own subtasks.

There are several ways to create a subtask:

  • From Plan — drill into a task, then tap the plus button to create a child task
  • Inline — use the “Add Task” button that appears below a parent task in the Plan view
  • Task Form — when creating or editing a task, use the parent task picker to assign it under any existing task
  • Quick Capture — use the Parent: sub1, sub2 syntax to create a parent with children in one line

When editing a task, tap the parent field to open the parent task picker. This shows your full task tree with a search bar, letting you place the task anywhere in your hierarchy.

Toggle Inbox to make the task a top-level item with no parent.

When viewing tasks in Focus, Upcoming, Priority, or Search, breadcrumb paths show each task’s position in the hierarchy. Tap any breadcrumb to navigate to that level.

In Plan view, tap the chevron next to any parent task to expand or collapse its children. Expansion state is remembered per view and persists between sessions.

The Expand All and Collapse All toggles let you quickly open or close the entire tree.

  • Use hierarchy to break large projects into manageable pieces
  • Keep your top level clean with broad categories, and nest details underneath
  • You can reparent tasks at any time by editing their parent field
